RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) affords the wireless identification of objects and storing diverse information about them. RFID is often identified as "electronic barcode" or as "barcode of the future".

Compared with barcodes RFID offers many advantages. The most significant advantage is the radio-electronic transmission of informations. Audio-visual contact between scanner and label is no more required. The cumbersome and time-consuming turning of products or packages for searching the barcode has an end. An RFID tag can store a large number of informations, transport them and can be adjusted at any desired and safe position in or on the object. To ensure the safety RFID-tags can be equipped with an alarm function.

There are several common types of RFID-systems in use which are operating right on different frequencies. The most common are RF-transponders (High-Frequencyy at 13.65 MHz, reading distance about 1-1.5 meters) and transponder UHF (Ultra-High-Frequency at 865-868 MHz, reading distance up to about 3-4 meters).
